Item description:

Superb late Victorian era convertible necklace pendant / diamond brooch with a typical Griffon / Griffin or also called Gryphon design. The pendant / brooch depicts an open winged flying griffin with a sparkling round brilliant cut diamond in its mouth. The brooch is superbly crafted in the typical and exceptional French repousse technique. The round brilliant cut diamond measures 3.5mm in diameter with an estimated diamond weight of about 0.20 carats and further estimated H color and VS2 clarity. This beautiful antique pendant / brooch measures 51.5mm wide and 34mm tall with a gross weight of 8.1 grams of 18 karat yellow gold. There are several French hallmarks and maker’s marks including a French rhombus shaped maker’s mark of a letter "L", a crescent with edges facing up followed by the letter "P", as well as hallmarks for 18 karat gold. Pin is also hallmarked. Scarce antique jewelry / jewellery collector piece in one of the rare Victorian diamond necklace pendants, brooches and jewels. Wikipedia gives the following additional notes about griffins: “The griffin, griffon, or gryphon is a legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. As the lion was traditionally considered the king of the beasts and the eagle was the king of the birds, the griffin was thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature. The griffin was also thought of as king of the creatures. Griffins are known for guarding treasure and priceless possessions. In antiquity it was a symbol of divine power and a guardian of the divine. Some have suggested that the word griffin is cognate with Cherub. In heraldry, the griffin's amalgamation of lion and eagle gains in courage and boldness, and it is always drawn to powerful fierce monsters. It is used to denote strength and military courage and leadership. Griffins are portrayed with rear body of a lion, an eagle's head, with erect ears, and feathered breast, with forelegs of an eagle, including claws. The combination indicates a combination of intelligence and strength.”
